"...the sort of relaxed manner, dexterous guitar style and slight burr in the voice vocal designed for coffee houses, bedsits, campfires and folk clubs ..."

Mike Davies - FOLKRADIOUK

  • Gren Bartley "In an age of easy songs..." more

"In an age of easy songs, self-propelled musicians, and so much new music that we store it not on record shelves, but in an imaginary ether in the form of ones and zeros, it is so easy to miss the gems amongst the characteristic mp3 hiss. Phil Riley has been writing in his own corner for years. Songs that quietly hush a bustling mind and make us listen to what he has. It has been said that “you don’t get to sing if you have nothing to say”, Riley certainly has a message. Whilst his songs, on occasion, delve into politics and hold news stories aloft to be learned, it is the quiet message that I love in his songs. Riley speaks to us all in each line, a rare gift. Folk music, the people’s music, is this; songs we believe, emotions we’ve all felt, situations we all face many times in our lives are described beautifully here. Not obviously, not trite, but brushing that aside to find a new way to reach each of us in our own corners. Long may I continue to here Phil Riley sing, for his songs give me hope, in many ways."

I live in Central England and have done all my life.

I’m a lucky man; I’ve never had a gun thrust into my hands and told to shoot someone before they shoot me.

I’ve been blessed with reasonably good health. Despite ups and downs I’ve had

a fairly uneventful life.

I hope I have something to say, nonetheless.

My songs are whimsical, reflective, occasionally silly, tongue in cheek, political, autobiographical, fictional, serious, songs of love, songs of

experience, songs of imaginings.

I hope there is something in what I do that strikes a chord with you. If not I hope that you find what you’re looking for in time.

I don’t have a God. Sometimes I wish

I had. If you have one, may your

God go with you.

I wish you peace,

love and happiness.

  • 1. Domino

Things don’t work out like I planned

I’m wandering in some foreign land

Voices low, language I don’t know

See the sailor on the strand

Won’t you lead him by the hand

Where the waters flow, where the waters flow

    (Chorus)

Be my light and light my way

Be my night and be my day

    Domino, Domino

Be my anger, be my hate

Be the lock upon my gate

    When I’m running low

Be my fire, be my hope

Be my hangman, be the rope

    But don’t say no

    (Chorus)

(Middle 8) Last to come and the first to go

First to run in case your feelings show

Show me where the Lei lines lay

Take me where the wild swans play

Under skies of grey, in their dying days

Leave our footprints in the snow

Warm our hands by the fire’s glow

One day we’ll go where the winter goes

    (Chorus)

  • 2. Long Dress

Where have you been with your long dress on

And no shoes upon your feet?

    By the waters of Babylon

To wash my hands and sleep

Wings upon a badge upon a coat

I saw my name on their silver ‘plane

I saw the tiger tear the tethered goat

Heard the rattling of my master’s chains

And the children dance and play

    Madam turn your face away

I saw the silence on their radar screens

Saw black smoke drifting from a lee shore

Who could have stopped their new machine

What are you all looking at me for?

And the children dance and play

Lady Enola is not feeling very gay today

Wheels ever in motion, crackling radio warns

Of storms on our ocean, on our land locusts swarm

Black clock ticks, brass bell chimes

Where have all your people gone to?

The wind cries as it tries

To find something to hold on to

And the children dance and play

Well, lady, what have you to say?

Where have you been where have you been

    Withe yourlong dress on etc

    .

  • 3. Turn To Stone

There is nothing at your window

    Just the autumn night

The voice was only in head

    You're safe alone

The rains have rained, the suns have shone

    And the winds have blown

    Lost in dreams and reverie

    It's dangerous to fall

    Into a sleep so deep

    There's no returning home

Find a track, turn your back

    And it's overgrown

    The more your greed

    The more you feed

    The more you feed

    The more you need

    The more you need

    The more your greed

    And you're not alone

Put another log upon the fire

    And watch it glow

Maybe the flames will tell you

    Where the time has flown

Drain your glass, don't look back

    Or you'll turn to stone

Drain your glass, don't look back

    Or you'll turn to stone)

  • 4. Leaf Upon The Wind

Well, I thought I was flying the aeroplane

But I was doing no such thing

I was just being blown around the sky

Like a leaf upon the wind

There you go, what do I know

Like a leaf  upon the wind

(Chorus) And I never know what the rules were

I never knew the song to play

Never knew the state I was in

Though it wasn't in the USA

And I never knew what to pray for

    Never knew what to say

Never knew where I was going

    But I got here anyway

I was proud as a peacock

    Showing off my tail

My feathers all green and blue

    Ah but I didn't know what I didn't know

Am I singing about you too

There you go, what do I know

Am I singing about you too

    (Chorus)

Well I'm travelling down that winding road

    Towards my setting sun

There are so many places I could go

Is there one that feels like home

There you go, what do I know

Is there one that feels like home

    (Chorus)

  • 5. Love In Pocket

    Got love in my pocket

Got my heart on my sleeve

But there's something in my head

    Confusing me

Well you can stay tonight if you want to

Just close the door in the morning when you leave

    (Chorus)

And be want you need to be

See what you need to see

    Believe what you must believe

    But don't fool me

    Well, living's a blessing

    Living's a curse

And we all carry with us

    Our own universe

But the only place the world looks like it seems to you

    Is inside your own head

    (Chorus)

I made a deal with God

    The  Supreme Being

    Although I thought it odd

I could not sense or touch or see him

But I asked of him and he agreed

Now if I don't bother him he won't bother me

    (Chorus)

    (Outro)

    Got love in my pocket

That's where I'm going to keep it

Save it for St Valentine's Day

    Away away away away

  • 6. Sinners Song

Black is black, something simple like that

    Don’t you know, babe

It ain’t always right, it’s not always right

    And white must be white

But it ain’t necessarily so, babe

Depends on the light, depends on the light

I’ve done things in my time, I ain’t lying,

They don’t fill me with pride, babe

Are we all the same? Tell me we’re all the same

We can’t change what we’ve done,

We deny and we run and we hide, babe

I want to change my name, want to change my name

    (Chorus)

The road is hard and it’s long, long, long

And I sing my sinner’s song

I’ve got friends saved my life, stopped me falling

Right off of a cliff, babe

Put me back on the track, back on the track

    But nowt theyneed a rideg

And Ican’t even offer a lift, babe

I can’t pay them back, I never pay them back

    (Chorus)

I want to paint the town red

But it seems we just run out of paint, babe

Least out of red, do you want blue instead?

And that beautiful line, well I said it was mine

    But it ain’t babe

Only in my head, only in my head

    (Chorus)g

  • 7. Northern Star

We all need something to guide us

To know where and who we are

Though we make seek out new horizons

We all need a Northern Star

I can see two distant fires

    Burning on two distant shores

    I must follow my desires

    And you must follow yours

    (Inter)

And the trees will keep on growing

In the forest where we lie

And the river will keep flowing

By and by, by and by.

Our kisses sweet last but a moment

Though we quiver as they thrill

When we are parted by an ocean

    Will our love linger still

    (Inter)

So God Speed, I can't go with you

When you're gone, next to my heart

     I willkeep your fading picture

I can't be your Northern Star

  • 9. She Dances

    In a woodland grove, alone

    Beneath the starbeam light

On a blanket of leaves she dances to

    The rhythm of the night

She dances to the rhythm, dances to the rhythm

Dances to the rhythm of the night

In the breeze she hears the sound

    A haunting elven tune

Her feet dance softly on the ground

To the rhythm of the moon

She dances to the rhythm, dances to the rhythm

Dances to the rhythm of the moon

She dances to the rhythm, dances  to therhythm

Dances to the rhythm of the moon

But there are days, there are days

    Masters become the slaves

There are days, there are days

    Cities slide beneath the waves

Cursed be he who caused my wounds

    Made my dreams so dark

Bless the stars, bless the moon

    But curse love’s poisoned dart

She dances to the rhythm, dances to the rhythm

Dances to the rhythm of her heart

She dances to the rhythm, dances to the rhythm

Dances to the rhythm of her heart

  • 10. Let It All Flow By

Gather up your worries and cares

    Don't leave any lying there

Bring them out to greet a brand new day

Come out and meet a brand new day

Put 'em in a little wooden boat

Push it out and watch 'em float

    Down the river and away

Down the sweet rolling river and away

    (Chorus)

And the leaves are falling, falling, falling

    And the breezes sigh

    Let it all flow by

We are the waves that Moses parted

We are the war that no-one started

We are the trees that kiss the sky

We are the trees that kiss the sky

We are the song we are the choir

We are the flame we are the fire

We are the sparks that fly

We are just sparks that fly

    (Chorus)

You can add up to something

If you can count to nothing

    But only heaven knows why

Only your god in heaven knows why

    And you can't cry forever

    But you can fly forever

There are no stop lights in the sky

There are no stop lights in the sky

    (Chorus)

There are fingers tapping at your window pane

Pandas hiding in the sugar cane

Worried ghosts are trying to catch your eye

Yes, they're trying to catch your eye

You can fret about it all if you're wanting to

But you know there are better thing s to di

I want to see those tears running dry

Let me see those tears running dry

    (Chorus)

  • 11. Breath Of Love

I've not got much idea about life on this planet,

No grandiose theories on how I got here

After all the thinking I've been doing, all

    the pain I've been through

You might say, Phil, by now you should

    have some kind of idea

I need some inspiration from up above

    (Chorus)

Breathe on me, breathe on me

    Sweet breath of love (x2)

I don't have much money, I got a whole lot of heart

But I know that don't buy very much beer

Got the same four walls, same stupid dreams and thoughts

That I had this time last year

Get a grip son, just what have you been dreaming of?

    (Chorus)

    (Inter)

Hold the fort for me ,baby, I'm coming

Don't know what your name is yet or what you look like

Colour of your hair, colour of your skin

That's got me thinking, but you will be beautifuls

    And Iam on my way

I am travelling to you on the corporation bus of time

So I may be a few minutes late but I'm coming

    You lucky lady

    (Chorus)

    I ain't no aficionado. I ain't a painter I ain't a poet

I just strum a few chords that's all

And every time I think I've got a winning ticket

They seem to change the rules

Every time I stand up I just fall

I need an iron hand in a velvet glove

    (Chorus)

  • 12. Ride The Winds

Dance your dance, take your chances,

    Seize your day

    The watch in tomorrow’s pocket

    Ticks away

Give what you want to give, say what

    you mean to say

Don’t leave it too late, don’t leave it too late

The wind plays and blows away

    Footsteps in the dust

Heart wants heart, lust wants love

    Love wants lust

And I know that I’ll be holding you

    soon enough

But I don’t want to wait, don’t want to wait

    (Chorus)

So I ride the wind on silver clouds

    Glide with the morning dove

And my soul flies to the one

    The one I love

And my soul flies to the one

    The one I love

We are made of light and shade

    And the strangest stuff

    Cut by the same tailor

    From the same cloth

    It’s just sometimes I feel that I’m

    not strong enough

To get over the line, to get over the line

    Where’s your phone, lazybones

    Come on pick it up

    Talk to me, transfusing me

    Drop by drop

Fill me till my heart stands still

    and time will stop

Ah but this ain’t dying, this ain’t dying

    (Chorus)

About Time

  • 1. All Very Foolish

    My body's 1951, my soul is '72

And though I know I'm getting slow

    There's plenty I can do

Let's go out on the town tonight

And have a beer or two

And don't you dare to tell me

You've got better things to do

    (Chorus)

    (Because) We're all very foolish

    We're all very wise

    With tears on our faces

    And smiles in our eyes

    We're all very happy

    We're all very sad

    We're cool calm and collected

    And we're all fighting mad

    We all see things clearly

    We're all very blind

It depends on how you find us at the time

Fifteen men on a dead man's chest

    Sounds like fun to me

And I promise I will do my best

    To be good company

I'll hang my troubles on a holly bush

    And hide behind a tree

Where I hope you'll find me kissing her

    While she is kissing me

    (Chorus)

Well there are dishes in the kitchen

    There's washing on the line

I know it all needs doing

    But tomorrow'll be just fine

My landlord's knocking at my door

    Come back some other time

    Can't you see I'm busy

With these good friends of mine

We've got some food to eat right now

We've got some drink to drink

    Though that'll mean more dishes

    For that kitchen sink

    (Chorus)

  • 2. All We Ever Have

    Bright moonbeams in childhood dreams

Where tin men come to life

    Ragged scarecrows play

It's not for real, you know the deal

What the sandman brings to us

    He can take away

We yearn for what has gone

And burn for what's to come

    But all we ever have

    All we ever have

All we ever have is today

    I see their faces clear

    And each passing year

    Eases pain but cannot

    Take the love away

Old memories wander through the trees

    Where yellow ribbons flutter

    And cradles sway

    Our yesterdays have gone

    And tomorrows never come

    All we ever have

    All we ever have

All we ever have is today

    Castles and kings

    Butterfly wings

All these will come to pass

    All will fade away

    Diamond rings

    All our precious things

    We really only borrow them

    I've heard people say

Three things I know are true

You want me, I want you

    And all we ever have

    All we ever have

All we ever have is today.

  • 3. Some Other Day

Drawn to your door, heart churning

Now I’m here I don’t know what to say

Carpet on your floor and the fire burning

Lights the crumpled pillow where you lay

Much too old much too wise

    Stars burning in the skies

Watch the silver fishes as they play

These visions dance before my eyes

    Polka dots and dragonflies

Will the madness ever go away

Guess I’ll fall in love some other day

Something wants you to come to me

Something wants to keep you far at bay

Feelings deep and blue run  throughme

Autumn in my heart so cold and grey

You are warm, you are near

Though I know my body’s here

My mind is just a thousand miles away

Cast my eyes down to the floor

Wish I knew what I’m looking for

Would I know if I found it anyway

    Guess etc

Sit for a while, lean on me

Watch the quiet dying of the day

Love to see your smile, feed on me

Then we let the moment slip away

    I tremble at your fingertips

    Promises upon my lips

Flutter to the floor and then decay

    I don’t want your confidence

    I don’t want your innocence

Don’t want you to look at me that way

    Guess etc

Walking down the road, my back to you

Didn’t want things turning out this way

Should I turn and go back to you

Would that be a crazy game to play

Just look forward, just walk on

    Till Io findthat rubicon

Till I find that ferryman to pay

I know the sun will be reborn

Come the morrow, come the dawn

I’ll be a man with wiser words to say

    Guess etc

    )

  • 4. Time Lord

    I didn’t have a photograph,

I just knew that one day at last

I’d see you and I’d know you

from your head down to your toes

Saw you cross the street that day,

    followed as you ran away

Found you hiding in a bar-café

    wearing someone else’s clothes

I begged you then to come with me,

    run with me through time,

Just turn your world upside down

    until it looks like mine.

You wrinkled your nose and laughed

    at me, told me condescendingly

You just might come along with me

    if only for a while

    We started walking aimlessly

down city streets new to me

You said you liked a mystery

    and I made you smile

    You pointed to your bedroom

    high on a second floor

A room that had a window

but did not have a door

We talked and talked on through the night, talked until the morning light

Until we’d put the world to rights

    and back to wrongs again

You said I see a way to heal,

I see a clock and a spinning wheel

I see a man who needs to feel

    that he belongs again

You led me to the cenotaph

    down avenues of lime

Where a soldier boy who had no name

    asked to borrow mine

When all the questions had been asked,

    in a frosted window glass

You showed me my reflection saying

    “See what you’ve become”

What a saw just wasn’t right,

my lips so thin, face so white

A frightened man who’d taken flight,

    what was I flying from?

This Time Lord had no future,

    this tiger had no claws

So I turned my world upside down,

    turned my world upside down

    Turned my world upside down

and now it looks like yours

  • 5. I've Been To The Moon

Every ladder has a bottom rung

Doesn’t matter if you’ve just begun

    Gotta keep right on

    ‘til you reach your sky

    (Chorus)

    Anybody can do anything

    Everybody open up your wings

‘Cos I’ve been to the moon

And it ain’t that high to fly

So when your road gets tough

    Runs too hard and steep

There’s a river that you cannot cross

    Runs too fast and deep

    And there’s too much

    running through your head

You just can’t seem to sleep

Remember what the wise men said

    What you sow you reap

So make a start if you want to win

Let your heart open up your wings

And you can kiss the clouds

    as you go flying by

    (Chorus)

When you feel like a flying fish

    Washed up on the sands

When you can’t do what you wish

    Just do what you can

And don’t try to get too clever

    Stick to what you planned

    Remember you can never

    Join a one man band

So come along, come along with me

Sing my song, sing my song with me

‘Cos I’ve been to the moon

And it ain’t that high to fly

    (Chorus)

  • 6. Bridge Of Sighs

If life is Paris you're the beauty of the Seine

If life is London you're Kew Gardens in the rain

I wish I'd never fallen for your lies

If life is Venice you're the Bridge of Sighs

If life is New York you're Manhattan in the fall

If life is China, you're the wrong side of the wall

    Jezebel's fire burning iny youreyes

If life is Venice you're the Bridge of Sighs

If life is Moscow you're the snowfall in Red Square

If life's Alaska you're the frosty mountain air

Now I've closed my heart to I can open my eyes

If life is Venice you're the Bridge of Sighs

  • 7. Gimme Lil Loving

    Train wheels are turning

    Round and round

    And the whistle's blowing

    I'm homeward bound

But I've got me a thirst

    That will not pass

    And what I thirst for

    Don't come in a glass

    (Chorus)

Oh won't you gimmee lil loving, baby

Love me till the break of dawn

    Gimmee lil loving,baby

Love me till the sun has come

If the sky is grey, if the sky is blue

If the sky is green I'll be loving you

Gimmee lil loving baby just to

    help me carry on

    She's from the Emerald Isle

    Eyes deep and green

    And the cutest little smile

    I've ever seen

    And my Irish rose

    Has a freckled nose

    And an Irish temper

To keep me on my toes

    (Chorus)

    Can't buy her diamonds

    Like the Koh-i-noor

    Can't buy her pearls

    From the ocean floor

    Can't buy her firs

    Or silk so fine

    But I'm all hers

    And she's all mine

  • 8. Enough For Us All

    There's drought in Australia

The rain don't rain in Spain

    It's turning into desert land

    And the politicians bicker

    Or bury their heads again

Well, at least they've got plenty of sand

    (Chorus)

    And the oceans rise,

    there are holesd in theskies

    When the rains don't fall

    And the rivers don't flow

    and the crops won't grow

Will there still be enough for us all?

There are bees in the States

    Deserting hives, just flying off

    Breaking the pollination chain

And we ride into the future

    Seems there's no getting off

    This headlong runaway train

    (Chorus)

    Well we are more intelligent

    Than pigs around a trough

    'Cos we're the top of

    the evolution tree

    Yes, we're so damn clever

    We're killing ourselves off

    Well that don't seem

    that intelligent to me

    (Chorus)

    Well I don't hear music

    I don't hear song

I don't hear laughter any more

    I hear mothers crying

    Leaders lying

I hear the drums of war

    (Chorus)s

  • 9. Feeling Like This

Sometimes you gotta make your mind up

Sometimes you gotta stick or twist

Get it wrong and you could wind up

Feeling like this, feeling like this

Lady luck sometimes will please you

Then she'll kick you just for kicks

Builds you up and then she leaves you

Feeling like this, feeling like this

    (Inter)

When you're down and life seems dark

    Remember you're lucky

It's only dark because you're down a diamond mine

    Find one, bring it up

    Polish and cut it

    And see it shine

See it shine, see it shine, see it shine

So if you are concerned for me then don't be

Parce que je suis le grand optimiste

Come round tomorrow and I won't be

Feeling like this, oh no, feeling like this)

  • 10. Belle Of Louisville

She heard voices in the dusty wind

And the cotton stayed in the ground

Mama ain’t stopped crying since that

    river boat went down

Poppa fills his bottle from the

    moonshine pail

It gets him drunk but his eyes will fail

So she left to join the ghosts who sail

    The Belle of Louisville

Her brother served the drinks on deck

As they sailed down to New Orleans

The boy she planned to marry shovelled coal

As they built up a head of steam

Somehow she knew before the word got through

Made up her mind what she had to do

So she left to join the ghosts who crew

    The Belle of Louisville

    (bridge)

The Belle of Louisville sailed with rich folks and rich folk’s schemes

The Belle of Louisville sank with a poor girl’s dreams

She used to pray for the boys in grey

Till they lost that bloody war

She always prayed for the one she loved

Now there’s no-one to pray for

The good lord turned his back that day

The voices keep calling her away

So she left to join the ghosts who play

    On The Belle of Louisville

  • 11. Give My Regards To LA

So glad you let me know, was a bit of a blow

That you’re gonna go and live such a long way away

    In the U S of A, Californ-i-ay, Yippee –i-ay

Don’t want to be unkind, but ain’t you being blind

What you gonna find over there if it’s lost over here?

    Can I make myself clear?

(You will) Never find the answer

    (Just by) Running away

(Would you) Give my regards to L.A.

I don’t understand you, you think that in the clamour

The glitter and the glamour of that city’s gonna rub of you

    That ain’t strictly true

It ain’t the car you drive, it ain’t the plane you ride

It’s what you got deep inside that should matter to you

And the rest of us too

    (You can) Find another lover

    (I can) Fight another day

(Would you) Give my regards to L.A.

Keep your motor running, never hand your gun in

I hope you see trouble coming from a very long way

What does the guide book say?

You always knew best, you were better than the rest

Guess you’re heaven blessed, well just remember to pray

    Every day

    (You can) Find another lover

    (I can) Fight another day

(Would you) Give my regards to L.A.

Say hello to the mayor for me etc

    Safe Journey now

    Keep in touch

  • 12. The Light Falling

I am a tired and ragged sailor

    Blown by wind and tide

    Blown by wind and tide

But when I'm standing on a shoreline

By an ocean wild and wide

I want to turn and see you

    standing by my side

I want to turn and see you

    standing by my side

When the new moon posts her sentries

    In the star-black skies

    In the star-black skies

And quiet peace enfolds the land

And the silent night owl flies

I want to see the fire burning in your eyes

I want to see the fire burning in your eyes

Hold the dream, hold the dream for me

Don't you dare throw it away

Hold the dream, hold the dream for me

One more day, one more day

Lie in my arms my sweet companion

    As we fall  throug space

    As we fall through space

When I awake and morning sun comes shining

    Through the curtain lace

I want to see the light falling on your face

I want to see the light falling on your face

Lost Legions

  • 1. Sinner's Song

Black is black, something simple like that

    Don’t you know, babe

It ain’t always right, it’s not always right

    And white must be white

But it ain’t necessarily so, babe

Depends on the light, depends on the light

I’ve done things in my time, I ain’t lying,

They don’t fill me with pride, babe

Are we all the same? Tell me we’re all the same

We can’t change what we’ve done,

We deny and we run and we hide, babe

I want to change my name, want to change my name

    (Chorus)

The road is hard and it’s long, long, long

And I sing my sinner’s song

I’ve got friends saved my life, stopped me falling

Right off of a cliff, babe

Put me back on the track, back on the track

But now they need a ride

And I can’t even offer a lift, babe

I can’t pay them back, I never pay them back

    (Chorus)

I want to paint the town red

But it seems we just run out of paint, babe

Least out of red, do you want blue instead?

And that beautiful line, well I said it was mine

    But it ain’t babe

Only in my head, only in my head

    (Chorus)

  • 2. Cherry Tree

    Tommy’s coming home

I hear he changed his name

He said the stakes were high

    He couldn’t play the game

Oh Tommy, how you’ve changed my friend

And yet the cherry tree’s the same

    We were kids together

    Behind the garden wall

    The sun shone brightly

And we played at at and bell

Oh Tommy, how you’ve changed my friend

And yet the cherry tree’s the same

You sat for hours at the top of the tree

    Walking over the garden wall

    Watching the world beyond

That was were you wanted to be

You wanted freedom that was all

    Tommy’s coming home

I hear he changed his name

He said the stakes were high

    He couldn’t play the game

Oh Tommy, how you’ve changed my friend

And yet the cherry tree’s the same

  • 3. After the Storm

Through the night heaven’s anger poured on the town

Thunder and rain teemed down till the dawn

Black and White, there were no colours to be seen

There are now colours in between

    After the storm

Blood red eyes, who's been getting inside your head

Who has been sleeping in your bed, cosy and warm

Blood red skies, why oh why is the wind so cold

Why this aching deep in your soul

    After the storm

Winter long, when the rowan tree leaves show green

When the sand martin next is seen, when the first lamb is born

You'll be gone, never stay too long in one place

    Angel why do you chase

    After the storm

  • 4. Oliver

Well come on turn him on just like a TV picture

It’s no use sitting there wasting time

You’d like to talk of love you know you can’t begin to

It’s the first thing that you look for

And the last thing that you find

    (Chorus)

If Oliver could ask for more

Then I do too so treat him kind

5 o’clock in the morning and I’m knocking at your door

Wet through to the skin, please let me in,

    Sweet friend of mine

And you say there are certain things that drive us all insane

And it’s no good locking stable doors

It’s no good crying all night or walking in the rain

Or watering flowers that died the day before

    (Chorus)

And do you ever dream of days that lie behind you

Do I ever cross your mind

If you’re still in this world I don’t know where to find you

Footsteps buried in the sands of time

    (Chorus)

  • 5. Just a Song

    Driving home, traffic’s slow

Wonder where all these people go

    Travellers all just passing through

    Here’s a song for what it’s worth

I was lost, she was found

Put me back onto solid ground

That’s the time when I know

    What are friendships really worth

    (Chorus)

    I don’t know if we’ll meet again

Don’t know where and I can’t say when

But a part of me, deep in the heart of me

    Won’t sleep easy till then

Grew so fast, flew so far

Burning out like a shooting star

Left the old to chase the new

To the far ends of the earth

    (Chorus)

Now the moon, clear and bright

Casts it’s spell on the road tonight

Travellers all, this one’s for you

It’s just a song for what it’s worth

  • 6. One Hour

    (Chorus)

One hour can hurry, one hour can wait

One hour’s a lesson learnt too late

One hour won’t bring them home again

One hour don’t matter in the end

    You stole the chalice

    As you ran away

    Memories spilled from the cup

    From my ruined palace

    In the fading day

    I follow your footsteps

    And gather them up

    (Chorus)

    Bring me a blanket

    Bring me a chair

    Answer that knocking, nobody’s there

    Where is the God

    Who’ll mend what I’ve done?

Bring me my legions, bring me the sun

    (Chorus)

  • 7. Porcelain Hand

  • 8. Safari Hat

Got a paper and pen and a safari hat

To remind me of when you were telling that

Your love was like a raven or a mountain stream

Got a fountain and pool full of silver fishes

Got a jester, a fool and a million wishes

Got a bailiff, a lover, house in the mud

    Got a sailor’s dream

    (Chorus)

Babe, don’t you think it was wrong

To play that sort of game with me so long

All for a crown of silver paper

All for your name in a song

Well the sun hides quick in the cloudy mountains

I won’t notice it I’m too busy counting

The cost of living a life like mine And I find it cheap

The humble, the meek, the sick and the well

All looking for something no tongue can tell

The meaning of living, well in case I find it

    I won’t look that deep

    (Chorus)

Well if you were a princess I’d be a frog

If you were a cat I’d be a dog

And if you were a ship I’d be the first rat that runs away

If you were a train I’d wreck your lines

If I was a clock I wouldn’t tell you the time

And if I was a cowboy I’d shoot you down

But they’d take my guns away

    (Chorus)

  • 9. Lucky Man

    My old jacket's second hand

And my pocket's full of sand

    But

    (Chorus)

I've got your love in the morning

I've got your love in the day

I've got your love in the evening

    Nothing to pay

I'm a lucky man on a lucky day

I lost my ticket to the show

You came and fixed it a little while ago

    Now

    (Chorus)

    (Mid 8)

I don't know if I've got all the answers

I threw the question book away

I like my eggs runny and my bacon crisp

So glad that money isn't high on your list

    Cos

    (Chorus)

  • 10. Rebel

I was born in a thunderstorm

The wind laid waste to the barley and the corn

Even with my very first scream

I shattered the hopes of a long-held dream

    Oh a rebel I’m bound

Oh a rebel I will be

    Oh a rebel I’m bound

I’m a rebel and I always will be

    I was schooled in a red-brick hell

The devil himself would ring the bell

My world was plagued by trouble and strife

All I wanted was a peaceful life

    Oh a rebel I’m bound

Oh a rebel I will be

    Oh a rebel I’m bound

I’m a rebel and I always will be

My dad would put me to the test

So I’d be better than all the rest

I was just the joker in the pack

I fell like an angel with Satan on my back

    Oh a rebel I’m bound

Oh a rebel I will be

    Oh a rebel I’m bound

I’m a rebel and I always will be

I’ll buck the system I won’t join in

Violence to me is society’s sin

    I know I’m a dreamer that’s out of fashion

But I’ll follow that dream with all my passion

    Oh a rebel I’m bound

Oh a rebel I will be

    Oh a rebel I’m bound

I’m a rebel and I always will be

  • 11. The Garden's Overgrown

    See how the sky

    Has turned a thunder brown

    The garden’s overgrown

    There’s nobody else around

    No paths lead out

    It’s dark beneath the trees

    The gardens’s overgrown

This is no place to be

    We plough and hoe

For all our lives and then

    Though many fields we sow

    The garden’s overgrown again

  • 12. Can't Feel the Sunshine

    Your fate, our fate

    Written in the breeze

Or written in the stars that shine

    Above, above, above

Sing a song of sixpence lady,

    Sing a song of peace

    Sing a song of anything

But not love, not love, not love

    (Chorus)

I can feel the wind a-blowing

    Making my eyes sore

But I can't feel the sunshine any more

I can feel the rain a-falling

    Like I could before

But I can't feel the sunshine any more

    Our faces show traces

    Of where we have been

Now I know the story line

Just hold me, hold me, babe

The king is in his counting house

    Looking for his queen

    Just like the storyteller

Told me, told me, told me, babe

    (Chorus)

    Slow down, go down

    To the old lake shore

Push the boat out through the waves

And row away, row away, row away

    If only we were children

    And innocent once more

    Mommy make these nasty feelings

Go away, go away. go away

You walked towards me, gazing forward

    Beautiful and tall

Then walked right by, like a ghost

    Walking through a wall (but)

    (Chorus)

gigs

Not many live performances coming up over the winter as I’ll be focussing on writing, recording and assembling one or two more videos. I’ve got quite a lot of catching up to do on those projects.

I’ll also be getting together with Neil as often as possible as we work on a more specific repertoire for the duo gigs – we’ll be trying a few new ideas out at the December House Concert so I’m looking forward to that one in particular.

The Market Harborough Theatre gig in January with the full line up of Borderline Crossing is a great treat too to anticipate for the new year.
